This Bill Isn't Mentally Healthy |
Sen. Victor Crist has introduced one of the worst bills of the session. It would keep students from getting psychiatric treatment even when they need it. The bill is backed by an arm of the Church of Scientology called the Citizens Commission on Human Rights, and Scientologists have never been shy about their opposition to psychiatry or any mental health services. |

Scientology Group Behind Attack On Mental Health Medicine |
CCHR is supporting two bills being considered by the Florida House that seek to further roll back the clock on the recognition and treatment of mental illnesses. In House Bills 209 and 909, unnecessary and unproductive requirements are placed on schools and the departments of Children & Families and Juvenile Justice that will make the identification and referral of children with mental illnesses more difficult. |

Row Rages Over 'Church' |
Founded in 1954 by US writer L Ron Hubbard, the Church of Scientology was once branded "corrupt, sinister and dangerous" by a High Court judge. It is based on the premise that humans descended from alien spirits, Thetans, who came to Earth 75 million years ago. The Thetans' enemies are "engrams", malign forces from other galaxies. Therapeutic cleansing, known as "dianetics", can drive them out, resolve all problems and lead to eternal life. |

Scientology's Volunteers Get Frosty Reception At Fire Scene |
As fire raged inside the LaSalle Bank building, a band of serious-looking young adults in yellow jackets hustled past the police tape toward the action. Their coats bore the words "Volunteer Minister." "I threw 'em out," said one chaplain. "If they want to minister to the people on the sidelines, that's great ... but they were standing in the triage and treatment area and they were making total chaos in there." A Chicago Fire Department spokesman was unaware of the situation but said he'd look into it. |

Couple Sues IRS Over Tuition Rule |
A lawyer for an Orthodox Jewish couple from Los Angeles claimed Monday that the Internal Revenue Service has violated the 1st Amendment by refusing to allow tax deductions for their children's religious schooling. The IRS should allow the deductions because it permits members of the Church of Scientology to write off the cost of spiritual counseling sessions, attorney Jeffrey Zuckerman said. |

Cruise As Nobel Co-Host Upsets Swedish Clergy |
Religious leaders in Scandinavia are outraged by the decision to choose Scientologist star Tom Cruise to co-host the 2004 Nobel Peace Prize concert in Norway. Many are concerned Cruise will use the event to promote the controversial religion and have called on the Nobel Institute to withdraw their offer to the "Mission: Impossible" star. Karl-Erik Nylund, a priest from Stockholm, said, "They're a manipulative sect that takes over people's lives and finances." |
