Tom's girl banned from crying in pain

Katie Holmes will have to suffer in silence while having Tom Cruise's baby under the weird rules of Scientology.

Batman actress Katie, 26, announced she is expecting on Wednesday night and is known to be taking lessons in the cult, which fiance Tom follows devotedly.

The Sun can reveal that the controversial organisation believes pregnant women must remain silent during childbirth and shun painkilling drugs.

War of The Worlds star Tom, 43, has often spoken out against the use of certain medical drugs.

And Scientology's creator, science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard ordered his followers: "Maintain silence in the presence of birth to save both the sanity of the mother and the child."

Traumatic

Cult members believe it is traumatic for babies to hear their mothers scream or groan while giving birth.

Hubbard also wrote: "The delivery should carry as little anaesthetic as possible."

But Sun doctor Carole Cooper said: "It's a crazy idea, a terrible way to treat a pregnant woman. It is quite natural to cry out when you are in pain.

"And why suffer? Pain during labour can just make it last longer."

John Travolta and wife Kelly Preston are also Scientologists. But Kelly wound up crying out for painkillers after attempting a silent birth.

Katie is thought to be three months' pregnant.

She had famously vowed to remain a virgin until her wedding night.

But The Sun revealed yesterday that Scientologists had urged her to get pregnant as soon as she and Tom were engaged.

Bookies have made Xenu the 4-1 favourite name for Tom and Katie's child if it is a boy. Scientology doctrine claims Xenu was an alien galactic ruler from 75 million years ago.

Ethan is second at 9-2, with Ron, after Tom's hero Hubbard, third at 6-1.

Katie's Catholic roots mean an Irish name is expected if the child is a girl.

Cathleen, her mother's name is 5-1 favourite, followed by Marie and Angelica at joint 6-1.
