How can you argue with the Scientology poster boys? Outside some Scientology centres are magazine covers of Tom Cruise and John Travolta addressing passers-by with the caption: "I'm a Scientologist. Come in and find out why." In 1978, nine top Scientologists, including [L. Ron Hubbard]'s wife Mary Sue, were jailed for burgling and wiretapping IRS offices. In 1984 in the Royal Courts of Justice Mr Justice Latey described Scientology as "corrupt, sinister and dangerous", "grimly reminiscent of the ranting and bullying of Hitler and his henchmen."
John Travolta and Kelly Preston are the parents of a son, Jett Travolta. Travolta and Preston, who are Scientologists, said in a statement that they prepared for "the smooth birth by following the method recommended in Dianetics by L. Ron Hubbard, which stresses complete silence during delivery." A spokeswoman for the Church of Scientology says Dianetics recommends no noise - from doctors, nurses or the mother - during delivery.
The Church of Scientology uses celebrity spokesmen to endorse L. Ron Hubbard's teachings and give Scientology greater acceptability in mainstream America. In 1955, Hubbard inaugurated "Project Celebrity." According to Hubbard, Scientologists should target prominent individuals as their "quarry" and bring them back like trophies for Scientology.
